Mitigating Urban Smog via Household Hydroponics
Project Overview
The pilot project examined how small-scale, household hydroponic food production systems can contribute to improved indoor and immediate outdoor air quality while simultaneously enhancing access to fresh, safe, and nutritious vegetables in urban settings. Implemented in selected urban households, the initiative aimed to generate evidence on the environmental, nutritional, and social benefits of hydroponics within dense metropolitan environments.
Key Focus Areas
Implementation Approach
The pilot followed an action-research framework, including:
Design and installation of household-scale hydroponic units
Training and hands-on guidance for participating households
Monitoring of plant growth, yield, and household engagement
Documentation of environmental and nutritional outcomes for learning and scale-up
