Addressing AMR & One Health

Project Overview

The project was designed to assess and reduce the risks associated with the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in livestock and aquaculture production. By applying the One Health framework, PNARD worked to promote responsible antimicrobial use, strengthen biosecurity practices, and improve awareness among producers and animal health professionals.

 

Key Focus Areas

AMR Risk Reduction

Identifying and addressing drivers of antimicrobial misuse across poultry, dairy, and fisheries value chains.

One Health Integration

Linking animal health, environmental safety, and public health considerations within farm systems.

Farm-Level Interventions

Promoting improved hygiene, biosecurity, vaccination, and disease prevention practices.

Veterinary Capacity Building

Delivering specialized training programs to strengthen professional knowledge and stewardship of antimicrobials.

Implementation Approach

The pilot followed a structured and participatory approach, including:

  • Selection of representative farms across poultry, dairy, and fisheries sectors

  • Baseline assessments of antimicrobial use and farm management practices

  • Targeted training workshops and awareness sessions for veterinary professionals

  • Continuous engagement and follow-up to support improved practices

Partnerships & Collaboration

This initiative was implemented in collaboration with veterinary experts, farm operators, and sector stakeholders, aligning with national and global efforts to combat AMR. The project supports broader public health and food safety objectives through responsible agricultural practices.

Impact & Way Forward

The pilot contributed to improved awareness and adoption of responsible antimicrobial use across participating farms and strengthened the capacity of veterinary professionals to support AMR mitigation. Lessons from this initiative are informing PNARD’s future programming and advisory services within sustainable livestock, aquaculture, and food safety systems.
